2nd LD Writethru: Two NATO oil tankers burnt near Quetta, Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Two NATO oil tankers were burnt near Pakistan's southwest city of Quetta on Saturday, local sources told Xinhua, adding no casualties were reported.

Unknown persons riding on motorcycle opened fire on two NATO supply oil tankers at Gogart along Mach-Sibi section of national highway, witnesses said.

The oil tankers were badly damaged in the firing as entire oil in the tankers spilled away. One oil tanker overturned on the road, witnesses said.

The incident suspended traffic on both sides of the highway.

Local watchers speculate the incident could be related to terrorist attack. If true, this is the third attack on NATO supplies convoy in the country over the last five days.

Prior to this, two attacks were launched by local terrorists on NATO supplies convey, in which at least 60 trucks carrying supplies for NATO troops in Afghanistan were destroyed, eight persons killed and another 6 injured.

The latest incident came shortly after NATO's announcement of opening a new logistic route from Russia and Central Asia in the north to Afghanistan to avoid frequent attacks by militants in Pakistan. Currently the majority of NATO supplies to Afghanistan is reportedly shipped from the south via the land route in Pakistan.
